HISTORY OF TEL AVIV PORT
As the first brand-new port in Israel, Tel Aviv Port was established in 1936 by Otzar Mif’alei Yam. The name means “Treasure of Sea Works.” The port was built 25 years after Tel Aviv‘s founding in the midst of the difficult relations for which Jaffa, the country’s principal port at the time, had become known.
The founding of the State of Israel and the ensuing global mass migrations were greatly aided by the growth of the Tel Aviv Port, which is now the largest in the country. However, when containerized shipping became the norm for moving products, bigger ports were constructed elsewhere, and it lost its thriving status and fell into disrepair.
The Tel Aviv Port was transformed into a recreational area in the 1990s and 2000s by the original developers Otzar Mifalei Yam, who turned the large old hangers into eateries, shops, and nightclubs.
