If the Masters Visited Jordan

Architect and artist – Eng. Heba Hamed Yassien reimagines the Kingdom through a dialogue between the great works of world art and the living spirit of Jordan.

A Jordanian visual dialogue

What if art history had happened here?

What if the great masters of world art had visited Jordan? What would they have seen—and how might their paintings have changed if their subjects, landscapes and stories had been born here?

This deceptively simple question became the starting point for a new project by Eng. Heba Hamed Yassien, a Jordanian architect and artist from Aqaba. Rather than copying celebrated paintings or merely dressing their figures in Jordanian clothes, Eng. Yassien began imagining how the stories themselves might change when placed within Jordanian culture.

The result is an evolving conversation: the Mona Lisa becomes a Bedouin woman whose stillness retains its mystery; Van Gogh’s restless sky sweeps over Wadi Rum; and the duty at the heart of The Night Watch is recast at Jordan’s borders as a story of protection and humanity.

This project grows naturally from Eng. Yassien’s earlier exploration of place and heritage in Aqaba in the Eyes of Artists.

The artist’s manifesto

Neither imitation nor opposition

“I am searching for the space where the West’s mind meets the East’s spirit—without either one cancelling the other.”

Heba Hamed YassienEng.

«أبحث عن المساحة التي يلتقي فيها عقل الغرب مع روح الشرق دون أن يلغي أحدهما الآخر».

For Eng. Yassien, East and West are not rivals. Eastern culture carries spirituality, warmth, family and memory; Western culture offers a vast inheritance of intellectual and artistic experimentation. Her work seeks a meeting place where both can remain themselves.

Chapter one

Jordan, seen differently

Each pairing begins with a visual, emotional or symbolic connection—not simply a resemblance between landscapes.

Closest to the artist’s heart

The Jordanian Night Watch

Night Watch

Not a portrait of military power alone, but a meditation on protection, duty and humanity.

Eng. Heba Hamid Yassien and her digital creative tools repeatedly returned to Rembrandt’s original composition—its movement, illumination and sense of collective duty. In her Jordanian retelling, soldiers meet a refugee mother and her children at the border. The light falls not only on service, but on compassion.

«الحراسة ليست قوة فقط؛ إنها واجب وحماية وإنسانية».

Reimagining the canon

Old compositions, new human stories

Aqaba is more than the sea

“It is the meeting of sea, desert, mountains, city and people within one remarkably small space.”

Eng. Heba Hamed Yassien

«العقبة بالنسبة لي ليست البحر فقط».

Its light is different. Its colors are different. Even the rhythm of life has a character of its own. Yassien believes Aqaba possesses far more creative energy than the opportunities available to display it. The city needs galleries, platforms and cultural events that make art part of everyday life—not a seasonal or marginal activity.

Behind the images

Idea, dialogue, revision

Generative AI is part of the process, but it is neither the author of the cultural idea nor the final destination.

01

Read the original

Eng. Yassien studies why a painting matters: its visual center, relationships, emotional structure and the element without which it would lose its identity.

02

Find the Jordanian story

She searches for a Jordanian equivalent that can carry the original tension while speaking from a different culture, place and memory.

03

Challenge the result

Characters, clothing, light, symbols and backgrounds are revised repeatedly. Visually attractive results are rejected when they remain culturally superficial.

Architect & Artist

Eng. Heba Hamed Yassien

A Jordanian architect working at the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, Yassien explores the relationship between art, place, identity and memory.

Drawing has accompanied her architectural practice for many years. She is particularly interested in line, ink and free expressive drawing—and in using art to reread cities and rediscover details that familiarity has made invisible.

In 2026, she earned a Master’s Degree in Strategic Management and Strategic Studies with distinction from the Royal Jordanian National Defence College. For Yassien, architecture, art and strategic studies share an underlying lesson: each teaches us to see systems of relationships and meanings rather than isolated images.

To Be Continued…

For Eng. Heba Hamed Yassien, these digital works are not the destination. They are the first sketches of a larger journey—one that will move from the screen to free lines in ink, marker and color, and perhaps into a complete exhibition where global art meets the Jordanian spirit.

«الأردن ليس مجرد مكان صغير على الخريطة، بل بلاد لها روح تستحق أن تُرى».

The masters may have arrived in Jordan through imagination. Eng. Heba’s own artistic voice is what comes next.
