WHAT TO BRING TO WADI RUM

Before you adventure yourself in this deserted area, here’s what you should bring:

Appropriate clothing
First you want to be comfortable while hiking and exploring the outdoors. Wear clothes you can move in and comfortable shoes;
Second, the heat of the desert can be extreme, especially during the summer months, so you might want to pack light and cotton clothing. On the other hand, in the winter it can get cold;
Third, because you will be visiting an area inhabited by Bedouins and, since they hold traditional values, it would be inappropriate and disrespectful to wear skimpy miniskirts and shorts.

  • Warm clothing to spend the night: Even though you should wear light clothes during the day because the desert is pretty hot, you should also pack some warm clothes if you’re staying overnight because temperatures can drop considerably once the sun goes down;
  • Sunglasses – the sun is intense;
  • A hat – for the same reason;
  • Sunscreen – again, for the same reason;
  • Water;
  • A flashlight, if you’re staying in a Bedouin Camp. They might have it, but it’s not a guarantee. The electricity in the camps is powered by solar panels and generators, so it might come in handy;
  • Bug spray: an essential for nights in the desert.
  • Map: Even though I recommend 100% to explore Wadi Rum with a guide, it never hurts having a map with you.
DISCOVER MARS ON EARTH

Wadi Rum is featured in a lot of movies that kicked off tourism. The area is used for the first time in 1962 for the movie Lawrence of Arabia, after that, it is also used for films as Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009), Prometheus (2012), Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) and not to be missed: The Martian (2015) starring Matt Damon. Please check FAQ below “Why is Wadi Rum famous?”

High seasons

 If you want to spend the night under the stars in the Wadi Rum, we recommend booking at least three months in advance. Due to the popularity, dates are often sold out quickly. Try your best to check the availability and find places with various rates.

Where Is Wadi Rum?

Wadi Rum (Rum Valley) is a desert valley in the mountains to the south of Jordan, near Aqaba and the Saudi Arabia border. It’s a barren, red place mainly populated by geckos, eagles, and camels. When it rains, hibernating desert plants spring out of the sand changing the landscape from red to green.

How Much Does It Cost To Enter Wadi Rum?

Wadi Rum ticket costs 5 JD per person but is waived in case you have the Jordan Pass.
2 Hours Jeep tour in Wadi Rum would be 35 JOD = $50

You can’t enter the valley (past the Bedouin village) in your own (or rented) vehicle. So if you plan on going it alone in Wadi Rum, you’ll be on foot from that point. At the risk of sounding obvious, this is the desert and it can be hazardous to your life.

There are limited spaces across all of the Bedouin camp operators and tour providers so avoid disappointment and check it out in advance.
It makes things easier to manage and it can work out cheaper if you had pre-booked your entire stay and activities in Wadi Rum. You can book accommodation in advance and just turn up but you’ll find it harder to bargain and find the right activity deal for you. You might also find that everything is booked.

Camping Overnight

A typical overnight desert experience starts in the morning in Wadi Rum Village where you’ll meet your guide. You’ll then set off through the desert, visiting the important landmarks and viewpoints. You will arrive at the cave before sunset.

traditional underground bbq

ZARB is A dish of vegetables and meat, like lamb, slow-cooked in an underground pit that is the Bedouin answer to barbecue. Although zarb can be left for two or three hours, it can also be ready in a third of the time, and it doesn’t need to be watched – making it a faster, and more convenient, alternative.

Stargazing

At night in the desert, there is little light pollution and you’ll have almost uninterrupted views of the night sky and the stars. This part of the world has been inhabited for almost half a million years. The only thing that has changed is the people. Living in lively cities makes it more difficult to witness the magnificence of the skies and heavens. Stargazing is another free things to do in Wadi Rum is watching the milky way at night and gazing at shooting stars.
