Magnificent species of scorpion fish, stonefish, frogfish, octopus and large eel find shelter in this site. More popularly known as ? The Tank ? This American M42 Duster with a self propelled Anti-aircraft canon was originally in employ of the Jordanian Army it was scuttled as an artificial reef on September 1st 1999 by the Jordanian Royal Ecological Diving Society and has since accumulated a lot of marine life.
This deep, coral-walled canyon was born after Aqaba Earthquake in 1983. Keep a sharp eye – life here is vibrant at all levels of the food chain and changes with depth, thriving on ancient fossil reef that descends to 35 m before dropping suddenly into the open blue water.
Sometimes called ” New Canyon ” although it is very old! Named after German PADI Instructor ” Oliver Wolf ” who discovered the site by accident looking for Eel canyon from the shore! Hence the name ” New Canyon ” by other centers who then saw us diving somewhere new! The dive starts at two blocks of coral known as ” the twins ” after having a quick look around here the dive can be made with a circular route around the two canyons with a tour around the table corals (once referred to as walking through Granniesgarden).
There are lots of life around the various pinnacles, you will find lots of scorpion fish here. If you look carefully in the sand gullies you will find many Triton shellfish which keep the Crown of Thorns at bay. For tec divers the deeper parts of the canyon offers wealth of further exploration. You can also finish a tec dive here after decompressing from the wreck of the Shorouk (3 wrecks in a single dive!) which lies at the bottom of Kirk’s Forest.
New Canyon or Oliver Canyon is one of the most interesting destinations for diving in Aqaba Gulf (part of Red Sea) on the south shores of Aqaba. Due to the temperature climate and gentle sea currents Tank Wreck was naturally covered by corals of various coloration. In fact New Canyon tank is virtually unrecognizable today due to numerous corals that cover it today. Don’t try to stick any body parts in a futile attempt to open a hatch or get inside. First of all you won’t be able to do it and secondly it is inhabited by a moray eel that is not very friendly.
Scorpionfish and molluscs are particularly common here, along with schooling reef fish and a wide variety of sandy-bottom dwellers between coral heads and pinnacles. With corals, anemones, sponges, and other invertebrate creatures all well-represented along the canyon’s coral walls, shoals of fish are common to the area as the mild tidal current funnels nutrient-rich water toward the open sea ahead of you.

Tour aside - some observations about Petra - it is amazing and a lifetime highlight. But it is hard to imagine a major tourist site so badly run. The walk to the treasury is easy - downhill and you are told you can get a golf cart for the ride back up But - there are too few carts and run too infrequently- when we were there the wait for a cart was about two hours! And they charge was about $25 for a 5 minute ride half way up.
We ended up walking up - but at the end of the cavern we opted for the "free" horse ride (just tips!) for the reminder of the hike. What a rip off! First a tip to help you on the horse; then a tip to take your picture, then a tip to lead the horse and then a tip to help you off the horse - and no matter what you offered as a tip it wasn't enough and you were yelled for to giving enough! Best to avoid the locals.
