One of the favourites for underwater photographers; Eels, vibrant shallow corals, curious puffers… Eel Garden is simply a fantastic diving spot. Despite ‘Ras Al Yamanya’ is the site’s real name, its popular nickname ‘Eel Garden’ is accurate, too: this site is home to one of the largest known colonies of Garden Eels, living in a wide expanse of seagrass in just 7-10m of water and frequented by several species of moray.
Site of the famous ” pinnacle ”. It get this name after the myriads of garden eels resident in the sand and grass areas here. This provides an excellent area for photography. There is a sandy slope down to 20 meters (cover in garden eels – you need to stay still for them to appear). There is a fantastic display of black corals.
The pinnacle covered in an array of soft corals. It is a home for many different species of Morays, rare Harlequin Shrimp and Ghost Pipe Fish. Plus lots of Glass Fish protected by a Red Toothed Grouper and Lion Fish.
With an easy shore access, the Eel Garden dive site offers a number of surprises. As well as the obligatory garden eels, this site is home to an assortment of other interesting critters. Crossing the sand and heading left from the shore, there are several coral heads hosting yellow-mouthed morays and anemones.
To experience the Ras Al Yamanya to the fullest, you’ll need careful buoyancy control. The variety of macro life here is astounding if you can get close enough to a pinnacle without damaging it – or kicking up the sandy bottom.
Following the bottom contour back to safety-stop and exit, we’ll have another chance to look for those seahorses. And if you’ve never been night diving before, we should definitely come back here later – swimming crabs, octopi, and other nocturnal creatures feed here regularly and even the sandy bottom comes alive. It’ll be a great introduction.
