Named because of the black rock that is on the shore just by the entrance point. Easy to access, the first thing you’ll notice is the mellow conditions – despite its medium current, Black Rock is sheltered and pristine with a wide diversity in both topography and wildlife. The reef slopes gently away from us in all directions.
Black Rock dive site provides very easy access. It is ideal for snorkelers and anyone who is new to the area. Hence a coral garden starts just below the surface and extends outwards for approximately 30m when it drops away steeply.
Variety is always the word of the day at Black Rock. you’ll see huge lettuce corals, with fire-coral fringing reef, soft coral heads and fossil-reef pinnacles all mixed together (though the general contour of the reef is fairly flat). The current you’re feeling carries oxygen and nutrients with it. Life uses them to thrive – you’ll find puffers, stingrays, morays, seahorses, nudibranchs, turtles, and large pelagics in varying quantities (and at varying depths) on almost every dive.

On your way back at about 10m have a look at the Marine Science Station’s research tools, used to study rate of coral growth and sedimentation. Large triggerfish and Arabian Angle fish can be found amongst the fringing reef as well as many upside down jellyfish.
Heading north there are immense coral slopes and valleys with large black coral “bushes”. Marine life – Emperor, Snapper, Crocodile Fish, Lyre Tail, small Trigger Fish, Wrasse, Parrot Fish, Lion Fish, Scorpion Fish, Box Fish, many Butterfly Fish and regularly visited by Turtles.
The reef has a prolific number of fish and if you are lucky you may see one of the turtles that frequent this site. A new highlight of this dive site is, beneath the new jetty at Club Berenice, shoals of small fish gather providing food for many predators such as Lionfish and Barracuda.
