This scuba dive is located between Rainbow Reef and Black Rock, it consists of some interesting features including some cables which lie over the sea bed and through a large canyon as well as a few metal tubes. There are now even corals growing along the nets which cover the reef in parts. There is some trash which lies here but it is becoming more clean as it is more regularly dived. It’s an interesting site where one never knows what they might come across.
Cable Reef, like the name has an electricity cables that connect Jordan to Egypt which become part of the reef. This is an amazing view with some occasional visits of turtles.
The electrical cables were laid from Jordan to Egypt in 1996. There are four cables running out over the seabed, the two cables to the North run through a deep canyon. Here the reef has been shored up on either side to prevent it collapsing on the cables. Large steel netting covers the reef to the North and South, coral is now growing through this. Large metal tubes straddle the canyon preventing collapse. These are now a habitat for soft corals and sponges, there is a great change for divers to spot an octopus or Spotted Eagle Ray one the dive site.

After you start the dive, head north down to a deep galley where two big walls on the side of the reef separated by the pipes. Keep going along the reef and try to a spot a Spanish Dancers. The hard corals are very dense and wealth and provide a perfect habitat for lots of shrimps and lobsters. Also because of its opening and depth, you might see some Napoleon crossing!.

It is a great place for photos, because even at a depth of 30 meters a lot of sunlight falls in here. The name Cable Reef comes from the fact that from the ground here comes a huge cable, encased in stones and mesh. Electricity cables supplies practically all Jordan with electricity. You can also have a chance to found stingrays here.

Tour aside - some observations about Petra - it is amazing and a lifetime highlight. But it is hard to imagine a major tourist site so badly run. The walk to the treasury is easy - downhill and you are told you can get a golf cart for the ride back up But - there are too few carts and run too infrequently- when we were there the wait for a cart was about two hours! And they charge was about $25 for a 5 minute ride half way up.
We ended up walking up - but at the end of the cavern we opted for the "free" horse ride (just tips!) for the reminder of the hike. What a rip off! First a tip to help you on the horse; then a tip to take your picture, then a tip to lead the horse and then a tip to help you off the horse - and no matter what you offered as a tip it wasn't enough and you were yelled for to giving enough! Best to avoid the locals.
