Rainbow Reef is one of the most popular diving sites in Aqaba Marine Park. It is particular famous for its night dives. Rainbow Reef gets its name from colorful corals that grow in cluster, creating multicolored rainbow of colors. Divers in Rainbow Reef are allowed to swim in the upper layers of water at the depth no deeper than 18 meters. Telecommunications cables are laid in the deep ravines and should be avoided. Rainbow Reef are famous for its night dives, when corals and crustaceous begin their hunting during dark hours of the day. Fluorescent bacteria give Rainbow Reef unique glow that is only visible at night. It is highly advisable that novice divers should get special courses before diving in the region. Additionally getting a qualified instructor for supervision might also be a good idea. When you can see large Spanish Dancers, lobsters, Feathered Star fish, moray eels and Lion fish.
Here you can see the telecommunication cable that connects Egypt and Jordan. Also you can follow this reef to the Cedar Pride Wreck when diving from the shore. A deeper gulley runs down the North side of the reef forming a nice wall along the side of the reef.
In 1996 electrical cables laid down to Egypt. There are four cables running out over the seabed, the two cables to the North run through a deep canyon. Here the reef has been shored up on either side to prevent it collapsing on the cables. Large steel netting covers the reef to the North and South, coral is now growing through this.
Large metal tubes straddle the canyon preventing collapse. These are now a habitat for soft corals and sponges, you might also spot an octopus or Spotted Eagle Ray here.
So if you want to dive ” Rainbow Reef ” DO IT AT NIGHT! You can also visit the Cedar Pride wreck which is spectacular at night and found at the deep end of this reef. The dive is accessed from the shore where there is a special kitting up area for divers. Please note that 12 hours notice is required for night dives and Navy personal have to be present when conducting them.
